چکیده

Two children who wear a cochlear implant (CI) in one ear and a hearing aid (HA) in the other ear completed a test battery designed to measure speech perception in noise and localization abilities. The children had different lengths of device use for both the CI and the HA (S1 having more CI experience than S2). General trends indicate that the use of an HA in the non-CI ear may benefit localization of sound sources and may degrade ability to understand speech in noise. Due to individual variability on specific conditions, data on more children is necessary to derive conclusions regarding the binaural benefit of combining a CI with an HA. The current test battery may be a useful clinical tool for individual assessment in children. D 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Spoken Word Recognition Development in Children with Cochlear Implants: Effects of Residual Hearing and Hearing Aid use in the Opposite Ear

With broadening candidacy criteria for cochlear implantation, a greater number of pediatric candidates have usable residual hearing in their nonimplanted ears. This population potentially stands to benefit from continued use of conventional amplification in their nonimplanted ears. The purposes of this investigation were to examine the speech and language development of pediatric cochlear impla...

Binaural-bimodal fitting or bilateral implantation for managing severe to profound deafness: a review.

There are now many recipients of unilateral cochlear implants who have usable residual hearing in the non-implanted ear. To avoid auditory deprivation and to provide binaural hearing, a hearing aid or a second cochlear implant can be fitted to that ear. This article addresses the question of whether better binaural hearing can be achieved with binaural/bimodal fitting (combining a cochlear impl...

Sequential bilateral cochlear implantation in children

Binaural hearing offers several advantages over monaural hearing including improved speech understanding in the presence of background noise and the ability to localize the source of sounds. Patients who have undergone unilateral cochlear implantation perform poorly at these binaural tasks despite their improved hearing capabilities. Bilateral cochlear implants have restored these abilities in ...

Restoring hearing symmetry with two cochlear implants or one cochlear implant and a contralateral hearing aid.

With today's technology and the demonstrated success of cochlear implantation, along with expanded candidacy criteria, the opportunity to provide optimal hearing to both ears for individuals with severe-to-profound hearing loss is greater than ever. This article reviews the advantages of binaural hearing and the disadvantages of hearing with only one ear or hearing with two ears with significan...

The Phonemic Awareness Skills of Cochlear Implant Children and Children with Normal Hearing in Primary School

Objectives: Phonemic awareness skills have a significant impact on children speech and language. The purpose of this study was investigating the phonemic awareness skills of children with cochlear implant and normal hearing peers in primary school. Methods: phonemic awareness subscales of phonological awareness test were administered to 30 children with cochlear implantation at the first to ...
